The library was built in 1854 and is the oldest public library in Australia. At the beginning of its design, architect Joseph Reed hoped to build it into a building that integrated a library, museum, and art gallery. However, later on, both the art gallery and museum moved to become NGV and Melbourne Museum.
The most famous La Trobe Reading Room in the library was built in 1866 and was not designed by Joseph Reed himself. The skylight of the dome reading room is nearly 35 meters high, grand and spacious, inspired by the British Museum in London and the Library of Congress in Washington. The tables and chairs here are all made of old wood, which is said to have been left behind since its establishment. The green desk lamps used are also nostalgic and retro. In addition to self-study, the library also has many exhibitions to watch.
