GPO is one of the earliest planned public buildings in Victoria, built in 1859 and not completed until 1919. It spans the colonial and federal periods and is a New Renaissance style building. Throughout the 19th century, GPOs were used as post offices until they suffered a major fire in 2001 and were rebuilt as shopping malls, now H&M's flagship store in Melbourne.
Because it is located in the central area, there are always street performers at the entrance of the mall, playing the violin or playing seven or eight instruments at the same time. The stairs of the mall are always filled with crowds.
